Re-publication of Manual

On Being a Supervisee Creating Learning Partnerships – 3rd Edition

This manual On Being a Supervisee Creating Learning Partnerships is not a philosophy or a policy or a narrative. It is a practical guide. A practical guide for a specific audience- Supervisees.

Manuals are never vague or uncertain.Their information is always front and centre as it is here.Their information is always understandable and familiar, since it comes from years of observation and experience andmost especially practice.

Practical manuals are difficult to find. Especially outside certain technologies. They have gone out of fashion in academic circles.

We are more inclined now to bury ourselves in the rhetoric of dogma, policy and statement.

Within the area of Counselling and Psychotherapy there is much written about the skill and proficiency of The Supervisor.

But there is very little information and guidance about the Supervisee. This is why such a comprehensive manual is essential reading for all trainees.

It takes years of experience to put such a practical guide as this together. The authors Michael Carroll and Maria Gilbert were national and international pioneers in the area of Counselling and Psychotherapy and their decades of work, knowledge and understanding of the needs of the Supervisee is captured brilliantly here.

The manual is a unique compilation and the result of the authors participation, training, listening, observing and learning by practice.

It is a generous gift to all trainees from the authors as a ‘condensed art of practice’ for Supervisees

The manual is your guide and your steer. It clears a way forwardand can be used as a reliable mentor throughout your supervisionin training and beyond.

It is always important to have a distinct overview on hand and one which offers the best practical references about supervision for the supervisee. All of us need such practical guides throughout our careers. Something to read at leisure, something to consult with, the go to document. And more especially for careers within counselling, psychotherapy, psychology, social work and allied professions where learning about ourselves and with clients constantly develops, enlarges and strives for human change and acceptance.

This manual is a kind of special dictionary of what to do and what not to do. It is a digest of method that both leads and instructs, guiding all the time with information that is not intuitively and instinctively obvious. It actively teaches the reader something because it is about procedure. And that procedure is written as instructional and informative, clearly and concisely with the expertise and the experience of the authors as its platform.

All manuals define their audience, and are written with a specific audience in mind.You.

it is an excellent reference source. It is essential study for anyone involved in counselling or psychotherapy training, or in any other training programme where supervision is an internal part.

Turning Point Institute has re-published the manual. We are privileged to have been able to do so.

Regrettably since the publication of this Supervisee Manual it is with deep sadnessI wish to let you know that my colleague and dear, dear friend over many years, Professor Maria Gilbert, died peacefully in her sleep on the 30th November 2020.

A salute to a great Scholar, Educator and Visionary who had an open heart of generosity in the sharing of her knowledge – through her publications and contributions in so many areas of our profession at home and internationally.

Condolences to her son Matt on behalf of all of the Community of Integrative Psychotherapists here in Ireland. She has left a generous legacy to our profession.  May Maria Rest in Peace now her service in this life has ended. So long as we live on so too will she in our hearts
