An accrediting institution is an organisation that has the goal of promoting integrative and humanistic psychotherapy and maintain professional standards for the practice of integrative psychotherapy. Its main purpose is the accreditation of integrative and humanistic psychotherapists and/or training organisations, which meet the training criteria stipulated by EAIP for training institutions.
An accrediting institution is an organisation with functions within the legal and formal rules of the country. There has to be legal grounds for the Institution for instance a Foundation, a Society, or other legal forms of organization. The Institution as organisation is legally responsible for the standards of its accreditation procedure.
The institution has an address, a place to meet and a good working administration.
Full Membership (Accrediting Institutions)
Selection to Full Membership
Applications for this standing as Accrediting Organisations will require to show that their procedures ensure an equivalent quality and competence in accredited practitioners as will be accomplished through trainings in Training Organisations accepted as Full Members of EAIP.
Conditions for selection to Full Membership
An accrediting organisation applying for Full membership of the EAIP shall fulfil the following conditions:
(a) It shall support the aims and objectives of the EAIP.
(b) It shall possess an accountable administrative structure, such as a constitution or the equivalent, which is comparable with the constitution of the EAIP.
(c) It shall have a code of ethics that is comparable with the Ethical Guidelines of the EAIP.
(d) The code of ethics must include a complaints and appeal procedure, which has to be public.
(e) The accrediting institute has a form of organisation that allows for internal consultation about the accreditation criteria and procedures.
(f) There are regular meetings of staff members. There is written documentation about the proceedings of these meetings.
(g) The institution maintains a register of recognised training courses in that country, and practitioner registers, and /or accredited organisations, as is the case.
(h) To get accredited by the EAIP, the institution has been in existence for at least 5 years and it shall possess a membership, of any standing, of no less than 100 people and/or 10 organisations.
(i) The Institute will have a written description of the accreditation criteria and procedures.
(j) In the written accreditation criteria, it is made clear how the applicants’ training background is assessed and/or how the training curricula of organisations are assessed.
(k) Professional taxes and fees must be clearly stated.
(l) Must have an APL (accreditation of prior learning) procedure.
(m) Must have clear accreditation criteria for psychotherapists, supervisors and trainers.
(n) Must have clear selection criteria for the assessors of individual and organisational applications.
(o) Must have clear re-accreditation criteria.
(p) Must have clear requirements regarding continuous professional development.
The EAIP Membership Committee appoints or invites two of its senior members to make a written assessment report to the Membership Committee. The applicant organisation is expected to pay for the reasonable travel costs of the appointed EAIP assessors, at the discretion of the appointed EAIP assessors. The applicant organisation is required to supply the assessors with copies of all its literature and details of its accreditation requirements and procedures.
In order to be accredited by the EAIP, the accrediting institution must include in its accreditation criteria the following:
1. The content of psychotherapy training for the accreditation of individuals and/or organisations must include: Theories of human development throughout the life-cycle, including sexual development; An understanding of different psychotherapeutic approaches; A theory of change; An understanding of social issues in relation to psychotherapy; Theories of psychopathology; Theories of assessment and intervention; and Practical Training: – This will include sufficient practice under ongoing supervision appropriate to the psychotherapeutic method and will be at least two years in duration.
2. The training duration for accredited individuals must be no less than 3200 hours, spread over seven years, at least four years of which must be in a training specific to integrative and/or humanistic psychotherapy.
3. An accredited integrative psychotherapy training program must consist of a minimum 4 years and of at least 1200 hours: at least 500 hours of theory and methodology; 150 hours of supervision; 300 hours of clinical practice; and 250 hours of personal therapeutic experience, or equivalent.
Provisional Membership (Accrediting Institutions)
An accrediting institute applying for provisional membership of the EAIP shall fulfil the same conditions as those for full membership, with the following exceptions:
- It can possess a membership fewer than 100 persons or 10 organisations;
- It may have been in existence as an integrative psychotherapy organization for less than five years.
Associate membership (Accrediting Institutions)
An accrediting institute may choose to apply for associate membership if they are not eligible for full or provisional membership, if they are not an integrative psychotherapy accrediting institute but wish to support integrative psychotherapy or have relevant links with integrative psychotherapy, or if they do not wish full membership.
